You're Just the Cutest Little Baby Cake!

I have been working on my design team assignments like crazy.  When I get started on my Glue Dots® Adhesives creations I just can't stop.  Really!

Saturday Ruth (friend) and I hosted a baby shower for my daughter.  I had been planning to try making a diaper cake for a month or more now.  I've never made one and never seen one in person.  To me they are super cute and a creative way to give a gift.  So without further ado here is the end result!

I was so surprised!  My first ever diaper cake and it turned out beautiful!

The Story
My daughter is very creative and to surprise her with something creative takes some effort on my part.  I picked her favor colors for the baby:  a soft pink and cream.  American Crafts helped me with my colors.  The crochet ribbon and paper are both from American Crafts.  I also took the opportunity to display one of my gifts to Tabitha, the picture frame.  Tabitha fell in love with this picture frame from Hobby Lobby but it was terrible expensive for a picture frame.  The following week all pictures frames were 50% off.  So Mom took the opportunity to pick it up for Tabitha's cake topper!

I used this tutorial from YouTube to make the base of the Diaper Cake.  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwiwZxHNPGUI watched so many videos but this was the easiest to understand.

Before you start adding the decorations to the cake. I glued a skirt to the cake plate using Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft. With all the movement I did not want it to slip. I then added my three layers of “cake.”

Measure for your paper to go around each layer of the cake. It took me three lengths of 12 x 12 paper for the bottom and second tier of mine.

Using the Fiskars Border Punch, “In Stitches” punch the bottom and top of each sheet of paper.

Add Glue Dots® Adhesives Glue Lines to the end of each sheet. Add a few Craft Glue Dots along the paper to help secure the paper and keep it in place as you layer. Wrap the paper around each layer finishing it by adding the Glue Lines to bring the end pieces together. Make sure the back of each layer is lined up. This will be the back of your cake.

Cut your wide ribbon to go around each layer. To give it a finished look Glue Dots® Adhesives Glue Lines at the end of each ribbon and fold it towards the inside about ½ inch. Do this for each layer. Place Craft Dots on the back of the ribbon in a few places to keep the ribbon from sliding out of place. Wrap the ribbon around the center of each layer and secure using Glue Dots® Adhesives Glue Lines.

Measure and cut the last ribbon for each layer. Follow the instructions from the first ribbon.

For the top I added some tissue into the center hold and adhered it to a doilie with a couple of Craft Dots.

Let’s add a bit of fun…

I added a few bibs to my cake by first adding a rubber band to connect two rolled up bibs together. Place a Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft at one end and attach it to the bib. Wrap the ribbon around and PULL the ribbon taught, add another Craft Dot and secure. The Adhesive holds wonderfully even when put under stress.

Other than the Teddy Bear I added Glue Dots Craft or Glue Lines to secure the item onto the cake. No pins to damage the diapers.

Here's the diaper cake in action!
See the items in the background?  Those are matching favors.  Here's how:

I cut my tag from Circuit’s Nursery Tales. I cut the lamb separately from the same cartridge and added to my tag with a Glue Dots® Adhesives Mini. This added a bit of dimension to my tag.

I enhanced the edges of the tag with Tim Holtz’s Distress Ink Spun Sugar and Vintage Photo.

Stamp a sweet “thank you.” Add it to your favor with ribbon or elastic thread. I used a baby powder scented candle .

Bags

Use a white bag to fit your favor. Cut a front and back panel to cover the bag. Coordinate the paper with your Diaper Cake. Ink the edges with Tim Holtz’s Distress Ink Spun Sugar and Vintage Photo.

Adhere to the bag using Glue Dots® Adhesives Continuous Line. I adhered both sides of the paper so that no matter what I put in the bag the paper will not come off.

Cut a length of ribbon that will go around the paper bag. Secure the middle of the ribbon to the bottom of the bag using Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft to make sure your ribbon does not slip to the right or left of the bag.

Tie your ribbon at the top and add a little tag with a safety pin. Here I made a tag out of coordinating paper with my grandbaby’s name and verse from A Mother’s Prayer by Celine Dion, and her pending due date. I accented the tag by added pen drawn stitching.

To give the favor bag a finishing touch I added pearls to the bottom. These are from Queen and Co. and have adhesive on the back. For this project I needed to secure the pearls so I could handle it, open it, and pull things out of it, etc. without the pearls coming off. I used my Tim Holtz center ruler to find the center of my ribbon and added my first pearl. I adhered it with a new product from Glue Dots® Adhesives “Mini”.

Since I was doing three pearls per bag I went ahead and added the pearls onto the adhesive roll and then pulled them off, as I needed them. It made the project go smoother and quicker. Continue adding the pearls on the bag 1 inch apart. Keep the ruler on the table with the center 0 at your middle pearl. It’s then simple to see the 1-inch mark on your paper. Tip: I use a dulled Exacto Craft Knife to add my pearls and many other embellishments that are small and have adhesive on the back of them. It makes my creating simpler.

Tada! You now have a coordinating favor bag and tag for your baby shower.

Have a Glue Dot Day!
