Celebrating Heros: Glue Dots® Adhesives Project

There will be parades, picnics, and celebrations.  You will see American flags waving throughout communities and many people will be dressed in their red, white, and blue.  There will be those who gather at gravesides and memorials to remember those who scracificed it all for America.  Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

I wanted to create some a patrotic bow for my granddaughter to wear with Memorial Day and it's great for all the celebration days we hold dear in America.  Of course you can translate this to any day or any country.

Patriotic Hair Bows—Alligator Clip

These are easy to whip up at a moments notice to make sure all the girls in the family are ready to show their patriotic spirit for Memorial Day.

Cut a 12-inch strip of your favorite patriotic paper colors. The width is determined by the size you want the bow to be.

Score the paper strip ¼” all the way across or get that first score down and just fold the paper back and forth. Adjust the length of the paper to the size bow you want.  This is also a great time to use Tim Holtz Sizzlits Decorative Strip Dies both mini and regular Rosettes.

Adhere a small piece of the Glue Dots® Adhesives Continuous Line on the end of your accordion folds and adhere the ends together. Set aside.

Punch two circles about 7/8”. Take the circles and place them on the roll of Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft. Leave them there until you are ready to use.

Ink the edges of the paper with Tim Holtz's Distress Ink, Vintage Photo.

Set the accordion paper upright on the table and literally push the center of the paper together and toward the table. Let the outer part of the accordion fold flair. Pull off one of your circles with the Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft dot. Place the circle in the middle of the accordion and you now have your back. Do the same for the front of the accordion fold. Add buttons, stars, wings, etc. Have fun creating your individual expression of thankfulness for our soldiers.

To cover the Alligator Clip cut a piece of coordinating paper to the width of the clip. Line the inside of the paper strip with Glue Dots® Adhesives Continuous Line. Open the clip and place the paper in the “mouth” of the Alligator! Slowly wrap the paper around the clip stopping a little over ¼ on to the back of the clip.

Use Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft dot to adhere the bow to the clip.

Show your pride!

Patriotic Hair Bows—French Clip

Cut a piece of heavy card or cardboard to the width you want to make your bow. The small bow here is made with a 3.5 inch cardboard and is the finished size of 2.5 inches. Find the center and make a 2 inch cut.

Starting on the front, right side of the cardboard start the wrapping of your ribbon by using an alligator clip to secure the ribbon. Moving to the left wrap the ribbon all away around the back to where you started and then go around one more time stopping a little over half pass where you began. Add another alligator clip to the left to hold it secure.

Push a pin in the middle of the ribbon (the pin should go through the cut you made earlier) equal distance from the end. Pull the ribbon off the card. Hold your ribbon in your hand with the top of the pin facing you and the end of the ribbon facing upward. Separate the loops by pulling the inner loop to the right. This will cause the lower loops to slightly separate. Continue to pull and form your bow.

Through the middle of the bow hand stitch a slipstitch. Pull it tight causing the ribbon to gather together in the middle. Tightly wrap the remaining thread around the middle of the bow knotting it off. Set aside.

Using a small piece of matching ribbon tie the ribbon in a knot. The knot should be in the center. Add a Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft dot to the bow and add the knotted ribbon to the center. Let the knotted ribbon ends hang over each side.

Bring the hanging part of the ribbon around the clip.  Adhere the ribbon to the clip and to each other using Glue Dots® Adhesives Continuous Line.

Turn your French Clip over and remove the bar.

Tightly pull one end of the knotted ribbon across the bottom of the clip. Add a Glue Dots® Adhesives Craft dot and make sure you have tightly pulled the ribbon. Glue Dots® Adhesives can take it! Trim back any excess ribbon. Do the same for the other side of the knotted ribbon end. Once it is adhered add the middle bar back into place.

If you want to use an Alligator Clip instead of the French Clip just leave out the instructions that say, “Remove the bar” and do the same.

This Grandma is going to be making bows of all shapes, sizes, and for special occasion for her beautiful granddaughter.
