Scrapbooking More Than Paper and Adhesive

I hope you had a tremendous weekend celebrating National Scrapbook Day.  I was determined to scrap more than usual to celebrate the our holiday.  I was having a terrible time just getting started.  Either something came up I had to do or I just could not get "inspired."

While I was looking through my dad's photos I was inspired.  I had scrapbooked a couple of photos from his oldest album but not many.  I decided, because of the age of the photos, that I needed to scan and scrapbook the all the photos to preserve his memories.

I spent most of my weekend doing family research.  In most of dad's photos he had wrote on the back who is in the photos.  In this album he did not do that as much.  So I had to become a detective.  I worked at matching photos from this album to his other albums.  I had to figure out the birth order of uncles to figure out who was who.  Mom helped me with who she remembered and to understand the writing on the back of some of the photos that didn't seem to make sense to me.

I'll have to share some of my discoveries in this new journey I've chosen.   The important thing I learned is that Scrapbooking and Scrapbooking Art is not just about the paper and adhesive, but it is about the people, family, events, etc. that have come before me and that I have opportunity to enjoy now.  So get out your detective hat and join me on my adventure.

My first layout from what I'm calling the Red Album Project is of "Perk and Mary."  Mom and I are not sure exactly who they are, but we do know that "Perk" is one of Dad's older brothers.  Dad's last name was Perkins and one of the brothers was called "Big Perk."  Dad had wrote on this photo "Perk and Mary."  For me this is a rare photo.  I haven't been able to find anymore of this uncle.

Inspired by a sketch by Gabis Pollacco.  The paper collection is from Bo Bunny's Abby Road and Welcome Home.

I love my Fiskars Limited Edition Jenni Bowlin punches.  This little row of houses fit just about anywhere.  I also used the new Crazy 8 Punch from We R Memory Keepers for the background shape; Martha Stewart punch for the lower boarder.  I love my awesome Fiskars micro-tip scissors for all the detail cutting.

My favorite element on the layout.  The flower and tile are from Prima, the flourish is Tim Holtz grungeboard inked with his Distress Ink Weathered Wood and Vintage Photo.  I cut the butterflies from Bo Bunny.  Special touch:  the red corner holder is from the Red Album.  There are a lot of extra corner holders so I decided to incorporate them into my layouts.  It like a piece of memorabilia from Dad.

  5. What a geat job you did in honoring those old photos. I've scanned all of my mom's photos that she has left (after the storage area in the house flooded). So sad that we lost so many, many years worth.

  6. Beautiful way to document these photos, Debby! I went through my Dad's old photos with him a couple of summers ago and I took notes on all of them for when I'm ready to scrap them.
