Project Sandbox

I opened up my blog to create a new post and it very nearly did not recognize me!   I have been sick and on medication that really messes with the mojo.  My granddaughter is very sick as well.  So my life has been full of things other than my paper art.  I hope to be back on track next week.

This Saturday is Little's 2nd birthday!  My husband (with a bit of help from Mimi) is creating a small sandbox table for Little to play in this spring.  Two requirements:  it must be a table and it must have a lid.

I googled and found this link, Moms by heart . net, that has a wonderful tutorial for a Water Table or Sandbox.  Jim took the tutorial and stepped it up a notch.

The following photos are of the sandbox in process.  We have a few more days and of course it will be done at midnight on morning of her birthday!  LOL

Papa working hard on Little's present.

Instead of cedar Jim picked out a very beautiful popular pine.  It is smooth and much more sturdy.  The cedar lumber was very rough on the back and my fear was that Little would easily get a splinter.

My idea was to turn the support planks the width instead of the length allowing us to have three areas of support instead of one. I also asked Jim to add brackets to all the legs and cross bars, again to add support.  Jim also used some type of snap cap for the screws that had a rounded edge to keep the kids from getting snagged on the screws.

Jim still has to trim the screws and seal the finish.  When he does the plastic container will fit into the table snugly.  This photo just gives you the idea of how it will sit.  We opted for Rubbermaid instead of the Sterilite box because the Rubbermaid lid locks down.

The tutorial said they only paid only $18 dollars for theirs.  We paid significantly more because of the better quality wood, the screw caps, brackets, I added another level of support with the second bar on the sides, and the box was a few dollars more.  The safety of a few rambunctious toddlers is important to me that way we all enjoy the sandbox.

As I said in my last post I am so ready for Spring!  I hope Little will love her Birthday Present from Mimi and Papa.

Have a Crafty Day!
